 In early 14th century England, Sir William of Wykeham began a tradition to assist wayfarers on holy pilgrimages. Travelers would go to the Hospital of St. Cross in Winchester for a free ration, or “dole”, of bread and ale. This became known as the “Pilgrim’s Dole”.
